FAQ

What is the ethos behind Monster Theater?

Currently, the gaming industry is saturated with overextended games that range from 90 to 200 hours, often exploiting players financially and demanding excessive time investment. These games frequently engage players in questionable practices like loot boxes, eroding the trust between gamers and major game publishers/developers.

Monster Theater is dedicated to restoring this bond by offering a return to straightforward, microtransaction-free gaming. We focus on creating games that are approachable, not excessively challenging, and rekindle a sense of wonder and delight reminiscent of childhood. Our philosophy, echoing the words of the late Satoru Iwata, is that "Above all, video games are meant to just be one thing: Fun for everyone."

Who are you making games for?

Gamers with a passion for retro titles, brief gaming sessions, and an appreciation for the early 2000s and the indie gaming surge of the 2010s.

What is the Monster Theater story?

Monster Theater emerged from the artistic vision of the PS2 game "Okage," inspiring both its name and philosophy. It was founded with the aim to create a welcoming and inclusive game studio for those who, despite their love for game development, often feel like outsiders even within this niche.

Our studio is a dream realized for those passionate about making and playing games, but who sometimes feel out of place, even in a community of like-minded individuals. Monster Theater is a haven for game developers who might be quiet, impassioned, exuberant, or slightly awkward. It's a place where these diverse personalities are not just accepted but are integral to our collective identity and creativity.

What studios does Monster Theater look up to?

We love Nintendo’s whole thing. Especially the Nintendo of the early 2000’s, back when they made games like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Specifically that game because it's so weird and "out there." Heart Machine's branding is great too, because it's so weird and visually interesting.

What is there to know about your first game, Atomic Owl?

At the heart of our vision is the creation of "Atomic Owl," a game designed to be a dynamic, enjoyable, and unique experience, drawing inspiration from classics like Shovel Knight, MegaMan X, Panzer Paladin, and Castlevania. Our game is crafted to be an exhilarating adventure through a world unlike any other in gaming, featuring an array of weapons, diverse play styles, and an innovative "neo-roguelite" element.

But more than just gameplay, Atomic Owl tells a poignant tale of fractured friendships and the journey to mend them. The protagonist, Hidalgo, is joined by a sentient sword, accompanying him as he seeks to reunite with and reconcile his friends. The game unfolds with numerous twists, offering over 20 levels and a host of Tengu enemies to conquer. Our aspiration is for Atomic Owl to become a staple and a topic of discussion in the indie gaming community for many years.

When is Atomic Owl coming out?

After a successful crowdfunding sprint, we are hoping to release Atomic Owl by May of 2025.

What systems will it be on?

We are shooting for Steam, Playstation 5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

What about the price of the game?

We hope to stay right in that cozy $19.99 range.

Do you have any planned DLC or expansion pack announcements for Atomic Owl?

Yes! Hidalgo’s story does not end with Atomic Owl. :)
